- Extreme thirst and frequent urination. As excess sugar builds in the bloodstream, fluid is pulled from the tissues, leaving a child with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes thirsty. As a result, a child may drink and urinate more often than usual.
- Increased appetite. Without enough insulin to move sugar into the cells, a child with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes can experience low energy levels, which triggers intense hunger.
- Weight loss. Unexplained weight loss is often one of the first signs of diabetes. Despite eating more than normal, sudden weight loss can occur in children with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes.
- Drowsiness, lethargy. As cells are deprived of sugar, energy levels drop.
- Irritability or unusual behavior. Children with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes may suddenly seem moody or irritable.
- Blurred vision. If a child’s blood sugar is too high, fluid can be pulled from thelenses of the eyes, causing blurred vision.
- Yeast infection. Girls with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes may have a genital yeast infection, and babies can develop diaper rash caused by yeast.
